Bemu Brief guidline summary in text

Brief

The brief is driven by discussions between you and I. The following is a guide to get the ball rolling. What function does this new product serve? What words would you use to describe the product or it’s context? Where will it live, that is; what’s the setting, context or market? What design style appeals to you? Who will manufacture the final product and what are their capabilities? What quantity will be produced, that is; is this a one off item, small batch produced piece or will it be mass produced? When do you need the finished product by? When do you need the final working drawings by? Is there scope for prototyping? What is your budget?

Mood board for a coffee table design

Mood Board

Over the years I have found mood boards very helpful in the design process. The design process is inherently visual so what better way to set the tone and mood of the design than creating a board that visually describes functional elements, style and context. The key to this process is that the mood of the board matches the brief which will in turn inform downstream processes.

Concept sketches of Zippo lighter Bemu butter dish and dustpan and brush

Conceptual

This starts with pencil and paper. Different elements are drawn from the mood board. Scale, proportion, details, manufacturing process, fit, finish, are all taken into account when sketching. During this phase meeting with you to discuss these low-fi sketches is essential. Once a positive direction has been determined I will move to CAD to produce some hi-fi renderings to help you visualise the product.

Engineering Drawing of desk

Technical

Once a final concept has been determined I will move onto CAD drawings. The goal of this process is to communicate the design intent to the manufacturer through fully defined drawings (or CAD models) – dimension and constraint. Drawings need to be complete, clean, clear and concise.

Example – Furniture Design

Design a desk for the  home office. Modern, clean simple, spacious, with a touch of sophistication. Reference spindle back chair. Design time; max one week, budget to match that week. Must be easy to manufacture by any skilled craftsman. Drawers not necessary. Dark timber preference for material with a matt oil-wax finish. Exposed joinery a plus.

A company approached me (fictitious) needing corporate identity and branding for their new venture. Based in Zimbabwe this company sees a gap in the market for off-grid real estate. Zimbabwe is currently facing major load shedding and there is a push from residence to move onto solar power to become independent of the national power suppliers. Currently there are a number of companies providing solar installations but this company sees scope for a fully featured off-grid housing solution with a focus on beautifully designed buildings, interior design services and furniture design services. The company needs a brand name, a logo designed, business cards, a billboard design and a poster. I came up with the brand name lighthouse. See the designs below.
